Professor Martin Mayfield Chairman
Martin spent 24 years as a designer of engineering systems at Mott MacDonald and as a Director of Arup. His background is built environment systems design and industrial research. His interests lie in a systems approach to infrastructure under the constraints presented as the reserve capacity of society to invest in infrastructures reduces relative to the rate of increase in size and complexity of the functions that they needs to support. His current research relates understanding to how increases in the complexity of systems of systems influence their fragility. He is the Infrastructure Research Leader for Engineering at Sheffield and is leading the Sheffield component of the UKCRIC initiative.  He is the principal investigator for the EPSRC funded ENCORE Network+ that is developing and disseminate new methods to improve the resilience and sustainable performance of complex engineered system.  He is a co-investigator for the EPSRC TWENTY65 Engineering Grand Challenge for Water developing Future Water Scenarios and exploring goal alignment across the water-energy nexus. Martin is a member of the Editorial Panel of The Engineering Sustainability Journal, Sheffield City Region Infrastructure Board, All Party Parliamentary Group on Smart Cities and the European Innovation Partnership for Smart Cities and Communities.
